Composer · Artist · Author · Founder of The Continuum Approach
Sarnia de la Maré FRSA (stage name iServalan) is a British composer, artist, and author whose work spans music, film, pedagogy, and visual culture. With a background in music and visual practice, her career has evolved across performance, composition, education, and independent publishing, forming a long-term catalogue that privileges depth, authorship, and continuity over trend or volume.
She is the creator of The Continuum Approach, an original pedagogical framework for music learning that centres orientation, composition, and psychological safety rather than competition or accelerated outcomes. The Continuum catalogue includes scores, studies, essays, books, and recorded works, developed primarily through cello, viola, piano, and double bass, and published independently.
Alongside her pedagogical work, Sarnia composes and produces music exclusively for her own films and narrative projects, maintaining a closed creative loop between sound, image, and text. Her broader practice engages with themes of aging, authorship, human attention, and resistance to automation in creative culture.
Visually, she is recognised for a restrained, fashion-aware aesthetic that integrates instruments, performance attire, and authored merchandise as part of a coherent artistic identity rather than promotional styling. Her work sits at the intersection of contemporary classical music, independent cinema, and experimental publishing.
Sarnia is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA). She lives and works in the UK.
