Navigating the Move: Relocating Your Wix Website to a New Server

The Tale Teller Club is moving its Wix website in support of anti-genocide. It has been much easier than I anticipated but I decided to delete the shops to make things more straightforward. Expect a lot of copy-pasting. It took me two weeks to move six months of hard work.

In the fast-paced world of the internet, the need for flexibility and control often leads website owners to consider migrating their sites from platforms like Wix to a different server. Whether you're seeking more customization options, advanced features, or a change in hosting provider, the process of moving your Wix website can be both exciting and challenging. In this guide, we'll explore the steps involved in smoothly transitioning your digital presence to a new server.
1. Evaluate Your Hosting Options

Before diving into the migration process, it's crucial to assess your hosting needs and choose a provider that aligns with your website's requirements. Consider factors such as server resources, scalability, customer support, and any specific features you may need. Popular hosting providers include Bluehost, SiteGround, and AWS.
2. Back Up Your Wix Website

Prior to initiating any changes, safeguard your website's data by creating a comprehensive backup. While Wix offers an export feature, it's essential to archive your content, images, and databases separately to ensure a seamless restoration process on the new server.
3. Secure Your Domain Name

If your domain is registered through Wix, you'll need to update your domain settings to point to the new server. This involves modifying the Domain Name System (DNS) records. Ensure that you have access to your domain registrar account and understand the DNS settings required for the migration.
4. Recreate Your Website Structure

Wix operates on a proprietary platform, and transitioning to a different server may involve recreating your website structure. Use this opportunity to reassess your site's organization and replicate its pages, menus, and navigation on the new server. If your new hosting provider offers a Content Management System (CMS) like WordPress, Joomla, or Drupal, familiarize yourself with its structure.
5. Transfer Content and Media

Export your Wix content and media files, then import them into your new server. Be attentive to image paths and file locations to ensure that everything is displayed correctly. This step may require manual adjustments, especially if your new server uses a different file structure.
6. Reconfigure Website Settings

Adjust your website settings, including SEO configurations, contact forms, and any integrations you had on Wix. Install and configure plugins or extensions that replicate the functionality of Wix apps you were using.
7. Test Your Website

Before officially directing traffic to your new server, thoroughly test your website's functionality. Check for broken links, missing images, and any other issues that may have arisen during the migration process. This step is crucial for ensuring a smooth transition for your users.
8. Update DNS Settings

Once you're confident that your website is ready for the public eye, update the DNS settings on your domain registrar's platform to point to the new server. DNS changes may take some time to propagate across the internet, so be patient.
9. Monitor and Troubleshoot

After the migration, closely monitor your website's performance. Address any unforeseen issues promptly and be prepared to troubleshoot potential challenges. Regularly back up your data on the new server to prevent data loss.
Conclusion

Moving your Wix website to a different server requires careful planning and execution. By following these steps and maintaining a patient and methodical approach, you can successfully relocate your digital presence while minimizing disruptions to your online audience. Embrace the opportunities that come with increased control and customization, and watch as your website thrives in its new digital home.
